Haiti disaster resource helps Filipino children
A booklet developed for children affected by the Haiti disaster was introduced to trauma counsellors, and will be used to assist Filipino children and their families deal with the trauma of the disaster. Child friendly spaces & trauma counselling
Tragically, two children from our Iligan City church perished in the flood that destroyed their homes. Recognising the vulnerability of children in disaster and crisis situations, the NDR team facilitated a meeting of individuals and organisations who had volunteered for involvement in trauma recovery. A medical team from This Side of the Road Outreach, Susanville, CA, will arrive in Cagayan De Oro this weekend. The team includes two general practitioners, surgeon, RN, and paramedic. Health concerns for flood victims
Upper respiratory tract infections were the most common illness presenting to the team at their medical station in the evacuation area and mobile clinic. 60% of the patients were children ages 2-12 yrs old. Philippines Air Force airlifts NDR & medical teams
The NDR and Humedica medical teams were airlifted by the Philippines Air Force to the isolated Ragongon barangay (village), in Iligan city, cut off by flood-swollen roads for two weeks. Relief to Rehabilitation in Cagayan De Oro
Nazarene Disaster Response’s (NDR) relief operations have wound down in CDO, with the focus shifting to medium-long term rehabilitation. However, material relief assistance will still be provided, as the need arises, in partnership with those agencies still providing that level of support. Nazarene young people continue to be actively involved in the Church’s compassionate response in Cagayan De Oro. Many agencies are reluctant to venture into some communities because of their cultural/religious background. The Nazarene Disaster Response (NDR) team in Cagayan De Oro City partnered with TV5’s Alayang Kapatid Foundation in the distribution of 2000 relief bags. The bags contained food, blankets, water, and stuffed toys for children. We have received an offer from our partners, the Compassionate Resources Warehouse, of shelter boxes (tents). There is still a pressing need for clean water. Purification tablets are in high demand, and therefore supplies are limited. There is increasing difficulty in sourcing the tablets locally. Water and Sanitation Hygiene (WASH)
80% of Cagayan de Oro City is without water. It is expected to be at least another month before normal supply is restored. People are drawing water from local fire hydrants, and fire trucks from nearby cities are bringing water in. Thousands of families in the affected villages have totally lost their houses and belongings from the flood. Many of those who survived the flood were not able to save any of their belongings. Clothes, food, water, portalets, school supplies, blankets, mats, cooking and eating utensils, and coffins are needed.
Because of the magnitude of the disaster, we are expecting long-term response. We haven’t fully planned yet on what else the Philippine Church can do. The focus of the Church’s relief efforts in the coming weeks will be to assist families with the clean-up of their homes. The church in Iligan has identified that many of its neighbours are not being reached by existing distribution networks. So, the church is reaching out to those individuals, families, and communities, and wanting to show that they are loved unconditionally and that the Church cares for them. Within hours of Typhoon Sendong’s devastation of Mindanao’s cities of Iligan and Cagayan De Oro, the local churches had established temporary shelters in its buildings. Evacuation centers are very crowded, with some displaced people living on the street. Relief distribution of the government and other groups is concentrated on evacuation centers.
